
Websites rarely get worse because somebody deliberately makes a terrible decision.
They get worse gradually.
A new plugin gets installed. Another tracking script gets added. Someone uploads a 4MB photograph. An old campaign landing page stays online. A new feature replaces an old one, but some of the original code remains.
Then another agency works on the site.
Then another marketing platform gets connected.
Individually, none of these things seems particularly significant.
Collectively, they create digital bloat.
And over the lifetime of a website, that bloat can have a surprisingly large impact on performance, maintainability, user experience and energy efficiency.
What is digital bloat?
We use digital bloat as a broad term for all the unnecessary weight and complexity a website accumulates over time.
That might include:
- oversized or poorly optimised images;
- video that is much heavier than it needs to be;
- unnecessary JavaScript and CSS;
- plugins that are no longer being used;
- remnants of old website functionality;
- duplicated tracking scripts;
- third-party marketing tools;
- unused fonts;
- unnecessarily complex page builders;
- duplicated or obsolete content;
- old redirects and legacy URLs;
- apps and integrations added for short-term campaigns;
- or layers of custom development built on top of one another.
Some of it is technical.
Some is content.
Some comes from design.
And some is simply the consequence of lots of people making individually sensible changes without anyone periodically looking at the website as a whole.
Websites accumulate bloat
This is why we don’t think websites should be treated as finished products.
Imagine buying a performance car and deciding that because it was in perfect condition when it left the showroom, you never need to service it.
You wouldn’t expect it to perform at its best indefinitely.
You’d check the tyres. Change the oil. Replace worn components. Make adjustments. Remove problems before they become expensive ones.
A commercially important website deserves much the same approach.
A website might be beautifully optimised when it launches.
But then the business starts using it.
Marketing adds tools.
Content editors upload things.
Developers make changes.
New products and services appear.
Old ones disappear.
Analytics requirements evolve.
Experiments get launched.
Three years later, you may have a very different website from the one that originally passed its performance testing.
That’s normal.
What’s important is having a process for staying on top of it.
What does digital bloat actually affect?
Website speed
The obvious consequence is performance.
If every page has to load unnecessary scripts, oversized assets and third-party resources, there is simply more work for the browser to do.
Some individual additions may barely be noticeable. The problem is the cumulative effect.
This is why website performance can gradually deteriorate even when nobody can identify a single change that “made the website slow”.
User experience
Performance isn’t only a technical metric.
Customers experience it.
Pages that hesitate before responding, interfaces that jump around while loading, oversized downloads on mobile connections and interactions delayed by unnecessary JavaScript all create friction.
If your website is there to generate enquiries or ecommerce revenue, unnecessary friction matters.
Search performance
Search engines care about the quality of the experience they send users to.
Technical performance is only one part of SEO, but a bloated site can also create wider problems: duplicated pages, sprawling structures, outdated content and poor internal linking can all accumulate alongside technical debt.
Digital bloat therefore isn’t just about the number of kilobytes transferred by a webpage.
It can describe an entire website becoming unnecessarily complicated.
Maintainability
This is one of the effects businesses notice much later.
The more layers a website accumulates, the harder it becomes to change confidently.
A developer removes something and discovers another feature relied upon it.
CSS written three years ago overrides a component added yesterday.
Nobody is quite sure whether an old plugin can safely be deleted.
A seemingly simple change suddenly requires hours of investigation.
We talk about theme debt specifically in relation to platforms such as Shopify: years of apps, customisations, scripts and overrides gradually making a theme harder to work with.
But theme debt is really one version of the wider digital-bloat problem.
Energy efficiency
There is also a physical cost to everything a website does.
Websites require data to be transferred, processed and rendered across servers, networks and user devices.
So if we’re transferring assets that don’t need to be there, executing unnecessary code or repeatedly loading resources that add little value, we’re also using resources unnecessarily.
That makes reducing digital bloat an important part of making a website more energy efficient.
And importantly, many of the things that make a website more efficient are also the things that make it better.
Smaller images.
Less unnecessary code.
Fewer redundant requests.
Better caching.
Cleaner templates.
More deliberate use of third-party services.
A more efficient website should not mean compromising the experience.
Done properly, it usually means removing the things that weren’t improving the experience in the first place.
How do you avoid digital bloat?
The biggest change is philosophical:
Don’t think of website optimisation as a one-off job.
A performance exercise immediately before a new website launches is useful, but it only tells you about that version of the website on that particular day.
What happens afterwards matters more.
We think commercially important websites should be regularly reviewed to ask questions such as:
- Have pages become heavier?
- What’s contributing most to that weight?
- Have new third-party scripts appeared?
- Are we still using everything we’re loading?
- Are images being properly optimised?
- Have plugins or apps accumulated?
- Has performance deteriorated?
- Are old sections of the site still necessary?
- Are there opportunities to simplify the underlying implementation?
- Is the website becoming more or less efficient over time?
Sometimes the answer is to optimise something.
Sometimes it’s to rebuild it.
And sometimes the best optimisation is simply to delete something nobody needs anymore.

Instead of saying that website efficiency and sustainability are important, you have a process for continually measuring and improving them.
And that’s something you can communicate to your own customers too.
You’re not claiming that a website was “made sustainable” several years ago.
You’re demonstrating that energy efficiency is something you actively monitor and work on.
Your website is an asset. Maintain it like one.
The best websites don’t remain good by accident.
They are maintained.
Measured.
Tested.
Simplified.
Improved.
If your website generates revenue, enquiries or leads, it makes little sense to spend heavily building it and then allow several years of digital bloat to gradually erode its performance.
You wouldn’t buy a racing car and never service it while still expecting it to perform exactly as it did when it was new.
Your website deserves the same thinking.
Keep it lean.
Keep testing it.
Keep removing what no longer provides value.
And keep making it better.
