The client
Purple Mountain Observatory is an outdoor clothing brand founded in East London, whose products are as at home in a local pub as they are on a difficult trail. With a growing product range and an expanding customer base worldwide, PMO had outgrown their existing website and needed a platform that could match their ambitions.
They came to us at a point where the brand was gaining real momentum, and the website needed to catch up.
The challenge
PMO needed to replatform to a website that could showcase their work and grow the ecommerce side of the business. That meant handling a migration carefully while building something significantly better: better for the brand, better for the user experience, and better for search visibility.
The challenge with any ecommerce build is balancing the visual ambition of the brand with the technical rigour that search and performance require. PMO’s aesthetic is distinctive. The new site needed to carry that distinctiveness without sacrificing the foundations.

What we did
We worked closely with the PMO team to identify technical priorities and benchmark competitor sites before scoping the design requirements. The result is a fast, responsive, modern website that elevates the PMO aesthetic with custom elements and interactions.
The site navigation uses a bespoke solution designed to provide a faster user experience and help visitors reach the right product categories in the ecommerce store as quickly as possible. Every element was built with performance and search visibility in mind from the start.
The results
- 404.4% Increase in organic search traffic two months after launch
- 3x Monthly average site visits since launch
- 1.8g CO2 per page view
A 404.4% increase in organic search traffic within two months of launch is a significant result for any ecommerce business, but particularly for one operating in a competitive market where established brands have years of search presence. The technical foundations built into the site from day one made that possible.
